Established in the year 1968, the University of Calicut is one of the largest universities in the state of Kerala. The university has more than 395 colleges affiliated with the University of Calicut. History of University of Calicut: The University of Calicut came into being when certain visionaries released the shortcomings of the existing higher education system in the state. The goal was to build up a university where students from all over can come and gain a quality educational degree. After multiple discussion rounds and a visit from the UGC’s special commission, on July 23rd 1968, the university came into existence on paper. The university had humble beginnings with only a couple of buildings initially. Slowly over the years, more departments, courses and buildings were constructed. More and more colleges were under its affiliation too. In 1968, the total student count at the university and affiliated colleges were 44,000. This figure was 1.12 lakh in the year 1992 and there has been a steady growth in enrolment since then.
